Non-sexist academic writing

What do we mean by sexist language? Basically, it's using language in a way that suggests that, for example, that one sex is more important than another, or that particular occupations are better suited to one sex or the other. For example:

  • using he when you are referring to an individual who could equally well be a she
  • referring to a policeman when police officer would be more appropriate
  • using expressions like the pilot, he……
  • similarly, the nurse, she ……
  • using mother instead of parent
  • suggesting in any way that certain jobs (salaried or otherwise) might be more suitable for one particular sex
  • indicating in any way that men are the main breadwinners in the family
  • referring to a particular sex where a book or article has been written by several authors, and where, for example, the first one is a man and your writing refers to he when in fact you should say they or the authors or the research team.

Non-sexist writing is something that you should develop. It might seem to some people that this is not an important point. The reality however, is that repetitive use of particular language can reinforce unhealthy stereotypes and strengthen prejudices of different kinds. It is important that this does not happen in a piece of academic writing. It is also very important to show the marker that you are not prone to make these stereotypical generalisations and that you are aware of these issues.

  1. I know in the life of mankind ever existed in this world, woman in some parts of the world doesn't have more freedom than in our time now. Oops did I said mankind? I'm sorry what I meant is humankind. Woman need our most respect as a man. They need to have the freedom that a man can do. Like education, driving (yeah driving), become a miner, same salary as man, etc. Equality needs to be established so a woman can have the same freedom that man can have. But it doesn't mean that equality needs to become a joke that those extreme feminist is roaring in with their mouth. For example, a woman can be nude with their chest just like men ( wtf.. haha), change the Manchester city name in England because it has "Man" in it. Equality has its own stand and degree. Woman need freedom for themselves just like men, but there is a degree for that just like men. Not everything is black and white. It's more like grey, which can be easily explained using logic.

  2. I think people should take it easy when it comes to mispronouncing pronouns. Nowadays, people are so sensitive when someone uses the wrong pronouns and make a big deal out of it when in fact, there’s so many big issues surrounding us that we should try to solve other than mispronouncing pronouns. These easily offended people that wants justice when it comes to being called the right pronouns are called social justice warriors. They enforce these ideas about gender being more than just two. This is appalling knowing that people are going against science just to please their emotional needs. They do this because logic doesn’t consider you emotion. This issue became serious and was taken to court. As a result, California made a law allowing jail time for using wrong pronouns. So, they’d rather spend their time making laws for people that uses the wrong pronouns on someone rather than use their time wisely to solve the sexual abuse, rape, poverty, and many more issues in the US. All in all, I think that using the wrong pronouns in literature or in real life doesn’t mean you’re sexist or is discriminatory against the other sexes.

  3. This is not an issue at all. People these days think of anything too much, they make everything into a problem these days. For example the word policeman is meant for police officers who are a man and what a miracle there is a word for police officers who are women which is policewoman, see it’s not that complicated, and so what if for example the first responder are all policemen is that wrong? Well it’s not because the first responders are all males and no female, but if the first responders are female then yes it should be mentioned as policewomen. And this “The Kariba damn is the largest man-made structure in Africa” the word “man” in this sentence stands for human not man as a gender, if people still thinks that this kinds of thing matter that much about man or not then maybe woman should only be “wo” because there’s the word “man” in it and it should be erased because it sexist.

  4. My first reaction to seeing the title of this article was "Oh no! The social justice warriors have infiltrated Academia and are now poisoning the norms of how we write just to suit their obtuse pedantic needs!", but then I started reading the article realizing this is an excellent way to extend the word count to reach the word limit within my essays, not to mention the fact I have been doing these writing styles from the very start, hence not affecting me all whatsoever. However, most of these changes are still somewhat extreme such as denouncing words such as ‘man-made’ or ‘mankind’. Does it really matter about the specific wording of these? Its not like men feel particularly special about these words or that it incites sexism in any way. The word ‘woman’ itself has the word man in it anyways so are we going to change or erase that too?

  5. There is a much bigger problem regarding gender issues rather than debating about non-sexist pronouns. In many cases, social movements do increase the quality of life and add benefit to society. Although I do not fully refuse the movement of non-sexist pronouns, there are few points that should be considered. First, I am aware of the motive behind the non-sexist pronouns, as women are being more recognizable in the society and workplace, there are professions that are dominated by men, but the number of women occupying those professions is getting higher and higher. In this case, some women may felt left out if the pronouns immediately pointed to men as if they are not eligible for that position, and vice versa. But it is something that already adopted in the mind of society bringing “stereotypes”. It would be pretty hard to shift and try to change that view. In this case, people who propose non-sexist pronouns need to be patient to see the changes in society. We are moving forward in many aspects, and people can not impose their will and want to others for their own emotional satisfaction.
